Children from the Jewish primary school (cheder) lined up in front of the author's home. The streets of their town, Torun, were unpaved gravel, and there were no street lamps. In winter, when darkness fell early, children returning from cheder made their way home by torch or flashlight. The man standing with the students is their teacher, one of the author's three brothers.
